Doctor performing physical examination of man's leg

When you’re in a car crash, you need to get to a doctor immediately. As tempting as it is to get back to work or go home and rest, your health and safety need to be the top priority. But why is it essential to go to the doctor after a crash? Here are three reasons.

  1. Treatment For Your Injuries

The most obvious reason for seeing a doctor is to treat your injuries. If you see blood or feel any pain after a crash, you should call an ambulance. If you don’t feel pain yet, it’s possible that adrenaline released during the crash has numbed you.

The only way to identify the full extent of your injuries is to have a doctor physically examine you, run tests, and identify health concerns.

  1. Medical Documentation

When your doctor conducts their examination, they’ll record their findings in your patient chart. This documentation will demonstrate that you were injured and that you sought treatment for your injuries. The sooner you have this documentation, the better equipped your attorney will be to pursue the full damages you need to move forward.

However, if you wait more than a few days to seek medical treatment, the insurance companies may question the severity of your injuries, asking why you didn’t seek treatment sooner. Going to your physician directly from the scene of the crash eliminates this doubt and makes your case a little less stressful in the long run.

  1. Identifying Latent Injuries

Seeing a doctor on the day of the crash will also help if you develop latent injuries. These are internal or “invisible” injuries that often aren’t apparent until they worsen several days later. For example, the crash may cause organ bruising. Left untreated, that could develop into internal bleeding days later.

When you go to the doctor as soon as possible and attend regular follow-up appointments, you’re much more likely to identify these injuries and treat them before they worsen.
